The Malton Residence located in the New York’s West Village was a complete renovation that required insight and diligence. The central focus of this project was to successfully connect the three levels of the apartment with a sculptural staircase. In achieving this goal a number of unique challenges presented themselves. The existing wood beams of the second level and roof needed to be reinforced with steel plates across into the masonry bearing wall and around the enlarged floor openings. The fabrication of the stairway posed considerable design and structural challenges, ultimately resulting in the interviewing of approximately thirty five different metal fabricators. It took great efforts to finally select a fabricator with the expertise to properly create the design within our given budget. The bulkhead was reconfigured w/ the endorsement from project architect to allow for proper weatherization and optimal light.
